Programs for Children
In addition to the daily drop-in art activities and play areas offered at The Children's Playhouse, we also provide special playtimes for different ages, music and movement classes, and "on the spot" one time workshops. Read below for more details.
Summer Music classes: World Music Series
Taught by Aaron Teague, a board certified music therapist, this series of classes is appropriate for children from birth to age six. Parents are encouraged to participate with their children. Aaron Teague has training and experience in family music classes that promote parent child connections through music and musical development of the child. You can sign up for just one class or all three! Cost is $9 per class for members and $12 for non-members but only $20 members/ $25 nonmembers if you sign up for all three classes in the series. Minimum 6/maximum 10 kids. Registration required, call 828-263-0011.
Music around Our World
3:00-3:45 Wednesday, June 18 or 10:00-10:45 Thursday, July 10th
During this class we will take a musical romp around the world. Families in this class will make music from different parts of our world including, Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and others regions. Through singing, moving, and playing instruments families will have a chance to experience the wonderful music of our world.
Dance to the Music
3:00-3:45 Wednesday, June 25 or 10:00-10:45 Thursday, July 17th
During this class we will explore the music that is connected to dance in various cultures. Music and specific cultural dances from around our world will be explored. Through singing, moving, and dancing families will experience the rich and varied traditions of music and dance.
Our Earth and Her Sounds
3:00-3:45 Thursday, June 26th or 10:00-10:45 Thursday, July 24th
Taught by music therapist Aaron Teague, this class will explore the wonders of Earth and her vast complexity. Families in this class will explore music and sounds of the Earth including songs of animals, plants, and families. Through singing, moving, and playing instruments families will have a chance to experience and be reminded of our connections to the earth.
On the Spot Programs
From sing-alongs to story hours our "On the Spot" programs offer drop-in fun! Unless otherwise noted, programs are free to members or with paid admission to The Playhouse.
Crafty Kids: Paint a Hat
3:30 Tuesday, June 24
Decorate your own ball cap to keep. For kids 4 and up. $3 for members, $9 for non-members (includes admission).
Tie Dye Month!
During normal Playhouse hours July 2-31 (The Playhouse will be closed July 4th and 5th.)
Make the ultimate summer souvenir at The Children’s Playhouse in the month of July. We make it easy by stocking everything you need. Take home your special t-shirt home and leave the mess here! We will have adult and children’s sizes on hand. Only $7 per shirt or $5 if you bring your own shirt.
Mama’s Music with Shalene Wyrick
10:30 Wednesdays, July 9 and July 30
Come sing a-long with classically trained vocalist and Playhouse mom, Shalene Wyrick. Shalene will lead us in some fun kid’s songs and might even treat us to a classical gem or two. Free to members or with paid admission to The Children’s Playhouse.
Silly Songs with Dave Hutchinson
10:30 Friday, July 18th
Come sing along with “Hutch” as he plays guitar and sings a variety of songs both kids and grown-ups like. Free to members or with paid admission to The Playhouse.
Polymer Bead Workshop for Ages 5 and up
3:30-4:30 pm Wednesday, July 30th
Learn how to make beautiful beads and friendship bracelets out of polymer clay. $3 for members, $8 for nonmembers (includes admission to The Children’s Playhouse).
Let’s Share Music Together
10:30-11:00 Thursday, August 7th
Come sing along with Vanessa Van Valin. Vanessa has a background in music and training in “Music Together.” Free to members or with paid admission to The Children’s Playhouse.
